Springdale resident Paul Bridge was the winner of the annual Deseret Morning News Top 10 story contest.
Bridge correctly picked nine of the 10 stories chosen by Deseret Morning News editors and reporters and correctly matched the ranking of five of his choices. By placing first, he won the $100 prize.
The only difference in Bridge's picks was his selection of a bear attack in American Fork Canyon that killed 11-year-old Sam Ives. The news staff ranked the attack 14th and had University of Utah professor Mario Capecchi's Nobel Prize in their top 10. Bridge correctly matched the ranking of the Trolley Square shooting, the Crandall Canyon Mine collapses, Warren Jeffs' conviction, escapes by multiple state prisoners from county jails, and the kidnapped bride.
Kevin Nott of Lehi placed second and won $50 by getting one fewer match than Bridge. He correctly picked nine of the same stories as the news staff but matched only four. The one pick he missed was choosing the Real Salt Lake funding instead of the escapes by state prisoners.
Becky Hansen of Murray finished third and won $25. Like Bridge and Nott, she picked nine of the same stories. She matched only two rankings, however.
