LAS VEGAS BYU needed to block a field goal by UCLA on the last play of the game to preserve a 17-16 Cougar victory last weekend in the Las Vegas Bowl.
After taking a 17-6 lead late in the first half, the Cougars sweated out getting shutout in the second half and watching the Bruins drive down inside the BYU 15 in the closing seconds for a would-be winning kick by UCLA's Kai Forbath. Forbath kicked three previous field goals in the game, including two long-distance boomers from 52 and 50 yards.
But BYU's Eathyn Manumaleuna got a hand on Forbath's final-second try, knocking the ball off its path to the uprights and sending the predominantly Cougar crowd at Sam Boyd Stadium into a frenzied celebration.
The Cougars conclude the season 11-2 and a second undefeated Mountain West Conference championship.
BYU takes a 10-game winning streak into the 2008 season.
