ORLANDO No determination was made by the Jazz on Friday regarding the fate of reserve shooting guard Gordan Giricek, who was ordered back to Salt Lake City after getting into a war of words with Jazz coach Jerry Sloan during Wednesday's loss at Charlotte.
"No one's suspended him, no one's told him when or if he's coming back," Giricek's agent, Marc Fleisher, said late Friday afternoon. "No one's decided on anything, apparently."
No such determination is expected, in fact, until sometime after the Jazz return from a four-game trip that concludes tonight at Miami.
Giricek did hear Friday from general manager Kevin O'Connor, though, and he spoke casually with team president Randy Rigby.
"He just poked his head in my office," Rigby said. "It wasn't a formal meeting. I just listened to him, to understand."
Rigby declined to disclose what was discussed but did suggest he expects a resolution in short time.
"Things are up in the air," he said, "but we recognize it needs to be addressed sooner rather than later."
Options include trading Giricek, a contract buyout or eventual reinstatement.
The veteran from Croatia is being paid during his banishment, and multiple teams have called the Jazz to inquire about him though most, if not all, are believed to have made low-ball offers.
Giricek, however, doesn't necessarily want to be traded, his agent reiterated Friday. "'Giri' would ... love to stay with the team but that's really in Jerry's hands," Fleisher said of Sloan. "If Jerry thinks he can make the thing work with Giri, Giri's certainly willing. If not, we'll have to consider other options."
It remains to be seen, however, if Giricek and Sloan can coexist.
"I know Jerry and (assistant) Phil (Johnson) for some reason have always had a hard time with Gordan, and I mean always," Jazz owner Larry H. Miller said after the incident on his in-house radio show.
"(Johnson) said, and this blew me away, (that) Gordan Giricek is the most talented player on this team, but he won't do what he's supposed to do. What he cited specifically was if we play the way we regularly play in man-to-man, Gordan will head to an open spot to get open regardless of what it does to the rest of the team and the spacing and running the play.
"We think he tends to be more effective for us against a zone because he's more free to roam as opposed to man-to-man," Miller added, "but I think the notion is he's selfish enough to try to get his shot and his points that he'll do what he needs to do to do that despite what the coaches tell him to do."
All that said, Miller did say he feels Giricek can still play for the Jazz.
HMMM: More from Miller, also on his radio show, discussing if he'd speak with Sloan about Giricek: "Jerry and I have what I would call a cordial relationship. I really go out of my way to not call plays, not suggest who gets playing time or not discuss matters of this nature with him ... I figure with Kevin (O'Connor) going to him, because Kevin's really his direct supervisor, that all I'd do is throw fuel on the fire, and I don't want to do that, and I don't want to put Jerry under any more stress, because if I broke the mold now and started getting involved, Jerry would be looking over his shoulder big-time."
