The year's highs, lows in radio

Here are highlights and lowlights of the 2007 year in Salt Lake area radio:

January: Kelly Monson leaves KBZN and ends up with Erica Hansen on KOSY, while Scot Young leaves KOSY, but later Monson is replaced by Stevie Davenport ... KSL and KSFI lead the latest Arbitron ratings ... Abby Bonell of KNRS begins a new talk show ... Steve Carlson is let go from the KXRV morning show and is replaced by Frank Bell.

February: "The Big Show," with Gordon Monson and Kevin Graham on KZNS, expands by an hour, while the "Jake and Jim" show begins in the early afternoon time slot ... KUBL hosts a 36-hour radiothon to benefit the Huntsman Cancer Institute ... KNRS adds two new Sunday shows ... "Johnson and Johnson" of KUBL stage a Valentine's Day camouflage wedding for 12 couples at Cabela's ... Bruce Reese, president/CEO of Bonneville International, is named America's Best Broadcaster by Radio Ink ... Mark Waldi loses his DJ job at KRSP, due to cutbacks.

March: KSL holds its 31st-annual radiothon for Primary Children's Medical Center ... KUER is the top Salt Lake market public-radio station, with a 2.6 audience share of the age 12-plus audience; KBYU is second at 1.9 percent, followed by KCPW 1.0 percent ... KFSI regains the lead in the commercial station rankings, followed by KSL, KUBL and KOSY ... KCPW wins a Murrow Award.

April: Gary Michaels moves from evenings to afternoons on KRSP ... Rod Arquette leaves as a vice president of KSL and Bonneville's Salt Lake radio group to become the new program director for Newsradio 710 KIRO and KTTH "The Truth" in Seattle. ... Sheryl Worsley is promoted to news director for KSL radio.

May: KNRS brings national talk show hosts Dr. Laura Schlessinger and Glenn Beck to town ... KSL observes its 85th birthday ... KUER holds small gatherings to help determine future directions ... without warning, "Dickie and Angel," the morning DJs on KODJ, are let go; Rob Boshard becomes the new morning DJ ... Joe Lee, Mark Eubank and the late Doug Miller are the newest inductees into the Utah Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame.

June: Danny Kramer of KDYL begins a new show on KJZZ-TV ... Rebecca Cressman replaces Jill Atwood as co-host on the KSFI morning show ... Millcreek Broadcasting files chapter 11 bankruptcy ... KMRI, AM-1550, is sold for $500,000 ... David James and Patrick Kinahan, having left KZNS sports radio, begin a new morning show on KFNZ.

July: KSL is one of five finalists for the NAB Marconi radio awards in the category of news/talk station of the year ... Bryan Schott of KCPW is selected for an expenses-paid one-week fellowship to Germany, conducted by the Radio and Television News Directors Foundation.
