Give yourself the gift of permission to change

The character of Scrooge in Charles Dickens' classic, "A Christmas Carol," allowed himself to feel the change, to let go of past habits and thoughts, and to start fresh. I have often wished for a sequel: to know if the old ways ever began to creep back into his life, if he had life-changing experiences in eliminating them for good, or if his heart was so completely changed that the very thought of returning to that previous life was abhorrent and unthinkable.

We are nearing the end of an incredible gift — a year of our lives — and opening another gift, a brand new year. During the close of this Christmas season, I invite you, and me, to let go of what isn't working for us, whether it be emotionally, physically, spiritually, financially or in any other way. Then to choose one habit we desire to keep for the rest of our lives — perhaps controlling our temper, not buying on impulse, even eating more fruits and vegetables. Whatever it may be, choose just one to focus your positive energy on achieving this year. As you open the gift of change, and experience it fully, who knows what lives it may impact. It may even change a nation.

LIFETip: Consider one habit that you desire to keep for the rest of your life. Commit to achieving that one habit in the coming year.
