A man who police say stole a gun from a sporting goods store this past week and managed to escape after leading officers on a high-speed chase was arrested.
On Monday, a man walked into Doug's Shoot 'N Sports, 4926 S. Redwood Road, to look at handguns. After being handed a .40-caliber semi-automatic Beretta, the man reportedly ran out the door with the gun.
About 1 a.m. Tuesday, members of the Metro Gang Unit reportedly spotted the man in a stolen vehicle. He led them on a high-speed chase that was terminated for safety reasons. The truck was found abandoned near 4305 S. 6144 West with ammunition in the vehicle but no sign of the gun.
Investigators also found the man's cell phone, apparently dropped near the vehicle, according to a Salt Lake County Jail report.
Later that night, the suspect was located in a house near 6800 South and 2700 West. The stolen gun was found in a kitchen cabinet, the jail report says.
After the man was placed in handcuffs and was being prepared to be taken to jail, he fled again, only to be tackled after a foot chase.
He was booked into jail on multiple charges and was being held without bail.
