MEN'S BASKETBALL: After playing a closely contested first 15 minutes, UC Santa Barbara's hot shooting took over and Utah Valley fell 81-61 to the Gauchos. Utah Valley was led by Ryan Toolson who scored 25 points.
Southern Utah
GOLF: Southern Utah University has signed Cedar High golfer Jeff Evans to a national letter of intent to compete for the Thunderbirds. Evans is a two-time first-team all-stater in 3A and finished fourth at state.
Dixie State
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: At Irvine, Calif., Dixie State picked up an overtime win on the opening day of the 2007 CUI Classic defeating Concordia 65-57. Brandi Barrett finished with a team-high 15 points; Jessica Carver had 13.
Utah
SOFTBALL: University of Utah coach Amy Hogue announced the signing of seven student-athletes to national letters of intent. Joining the team for the 2008-09 season are Hannah Clements (Poway, Calif.), Joni Cook (Eagle, Idaho), Haylee Hoch (Plain City), Jasey Jensen (Layton/SLCC), Brooke Olson (Bluffdale/SLCC), Tiare Palauni (Taylorsville) and Lindsey Palmer (Tooele/SLCC).
BASKETBALL: The Westminster Griffins received 182 points in the first regular season NAIA top-25 poll of the season, placing them 14th. Westminster jumped from 63 points, just out of the top 25 at No. 26, in the preseason poll thanks to a 7-2 start. The No. 14 ranking is the highest the Griffins have been since Feb. 15, 2006, when they were 11th.
SLCC
MEN'S BASKETBALL: After a close first half SLCC(12-0) opened up a two-point lead early in the second half Friday and never looked back beating Mt. Hood 74-42. Salt Lake finished with 40 points in the paint and Brian Green led all scores with 15 points.
