The Kearns Senior Center will now be named after Sen. Ed Mayne, who died earlier this month from complications related to lung cancer.

The Salt Lake County Council voted unanimously Tuesday to honor the former state senator and union boss.

Mayne, a 12-year Utah senator and state president of the AFL-CIO, had been fighting cancer since he was diagnosed in April of this year. Despite his chemotherapy treatments, Mayne remained active in state politics.

First elected to the Senate in 1994, Mayne rose to the rank of assistant minority whip.

County officials said the senior center, located at 4850 W. 4715 South, likely would not have been built without his leadership.
