11 SKI RESORTS OPEN

By Saturday, 11 of Utah's 13 ski resorts will be open and carrying skiers to ski runs.

The latest to open will be Sundance and Deer Valley. Sundance will open on Friday and Deer Valley on Saturday.

The two resorts waiting for more snow are Powder Mountain and Beaver Mountain.

Open runs are covered with both natural and man-made snow. Snow depths range from 30 inches at Alta to 12 at Sundance.

The forecast is calling for snow Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

In what has become a tradition, Deer Valley's opening weekend will also be the Celebrity Skifest fund-raising event. The invitational event will pair former Olympic skiers with TV and movie celebrities. Money raised will go to Waterkeeper Alliance.

Along with the celebrities, several members of the Kennedy family will also participate, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Competition on the modified slalom course will start at 1 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday.

There is no charge to spectators.

FISHERMEN DONATE MONEY

Story continues below
The Utah Stonefly Society and the Cache Valley Anglers recently presented the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources with a check for $10,750, which is the largest donation given to its Blue Ribbon Fisheries program.

The money will be used to improve fishing at Blue Ribbon waters, which would include the Weber River. The money will also be used to improve fish habitat.

When this money is matched with special federal funds, it could reach as much as $22,000 to $40,000.

The Stonefly Society and Cache Valley Anglers raised the money through fly-tying and fly-fishing clinics they offered last spring.

A prize for the biggest fish will be awarded. There will also be a number of other prizes, as well as free hot chocolate and hot dogs for participants.

Scofield is one of Utah's most productive fisheries. It is also the only water in Utah that offers a double limit to anglers. The daily limit at Scofield is eight trout.
