Women spikers advance in NCAA tourney
Team follows clean sweep with unlikely upset of top 10ers
In the first round, the Cougars took out Mississippi in easy fashion, 30-27, 30-21, 30-24. BYU then shocked No. 6-ranked Washington in five games, 30-28, 28-30, 25-30, 30-22, 15-13. It was just the second time the Huskies had lost on their home court this season.
Against Washington, middle blocker Rachel Dyer had a career-high 22 kills to go along with six blocks. Chelsea Goodman finished with 16 kills and 20 digs. Erica Lott had 17 kills, Ashton Hansen 13 and Bryn Porter 10.
In their first round win versus Ole Miss, Goodman led the way with 17 kills and 13 digs. Lott had 13 kills, Hansen finished with nine blocks and Amy Schlauder recorded a .321 hitting percentage.
BYU will now take on Middle Tennessee State on Friday at 3 p.m. at Penn State University.
ICE HOCKEY: After losing to Utah State on a goal with less than a second to play a month ago, Brigham Young played host to the Aggies last Friday.
The Cougars jumped out to a 3-1 lead and eventually won, 4-2. But the next night, Utah State turned the tables on its home ice, defeating BYU, 6-2, in Logan.
The Cougars had hoped to notch their first win on Utah State's ice, but the Aggies continued their dominance over BYU in Logan.
BYU (8-2-1) will play another home-and-away series, this time against Utah. On Friday, the two teams face off in Provo at 9 p.m. The next night, the game starts at 8:30 in Salt Lake City.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: The Cougars went 0-for-2 on an East Coast road trip, losing to the nation's No. 2 team and dropping a close game two nights later.
On Friday, No. 2 Connecticut pounded BYU, 80-34, on Thursday. The Cougars were led by Shawnee Slade's 10 points. True freshman Coriann Wood came off the bench to notch a career-high eight points.
On Saturday, a 22-point performance by Mallary Gillespie-Carling wasn't enough to beat Sacred Heart, as the Cougars fell, 49-44.
Carling was 6-of-11 from three-point range. She also grabbed four rebounds and had two steals and a block. Teammate Lauren Riley-Varley contributed eight points and eight rebounds.
"I'm very disappointed in how we played today," BYU head coach Jeff Judkins said after the game. "We're better than this. We didn't execute correctly, we can't score, we can't rebound, and we don't have any leadership."
SWIMMING & DIVING: The women's diving team notched a pair of top-10 finishes in the 1-meter competition last weekend at the Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas.
Sophomores Ava Jackman and Tawni Jones reached the finals in the 1-meter event, finishing fifth and seventh, respectively.
