Nuclear power gaining acceptance

Laura Springsteen (Readers' Forum, Dec. 1) accuses Sen. Orrin Hatch of falling for the tactics of EnergySolutions, which promotes a cost-effective, clean solution to our polluted air and environment. She also believes that wind, solar, increased efficiency and conservation are the answer. The reality is these are valid methods, however — even if fully developed — they would supply but a small portion of our requirements. I believe Springsteen is remembering Chernobyl and Three Mile Island. The only pollution from nuclear power is the spent fuel rods. Many environmental organizations are now amassing behind nuclear energy as being the most cost-effective, least polluting to our environment and, in fact, are calling for the removal of all coal-burning plants.
