PROVO Two Provo residents were transported to the hospital for medical treatment after their SUV skidded off the freeway, over an embankment, through a fence, down a hill and into some trees in south Provo Thursday about 4:15 p.m.
The driver, Jason Fewkes, 31, and his girlfriend, Angela Ewell, 30, were driving north on I-15 when they approached some slower moving traffic at University Avenue.
"From witness account and skid marks, it looks like they were coming in pretty hot (fast) when it happened," said UHP Cameron Roden. "Speed was definitely a factor."
The SUV rolled as soon as it broke through the fence and landed nearly upside down and facing the opposite direction.
The two people in the SUV were not wearing seatbelts.
Initial 911 calls reported the two trapped and bleeding significantly, officials said.
Police said Ewell was unresponsive when paramedics arrived and was transported in critical condition to Utah Valley Regional Center. Fewkes was transported in serious condition, also to UVRMC.
One officer stayed behind to look for part of an ear that was lost during the rollover, according to dispatch.
