This is the fifth year the Deseret Morning News has sponsored its Young Writers Contest.
"We value good, clear writing and the careful thought that such writing requires. Encouraging and recognizing such efforts among high school students continues, we believe, to be a worthy goal," said Joe Cannon, Deseret Morning News editor.
Many outstanding entries were received in this year's contest, judges noted. The contest was open to all juniors and seniors in private and public schools in Utah. Students were asked to write on the theme "If I could change one thing ..."

• Second place, Shelbe Rose Comstock, $500
• Third place, Fay Fay Ye, $250
