The Bountiful mayor believes Salt Lake City is too close to justify residents driving to a commuter-rail station, parking and then hopping on the train. He wants a light-rail or streetcar system to connect his city to Salt Lake because that's an option that will get people out of their cars, he said.
"We need to have the mass transit up in our cities because the congestion is going to get worse," Johnson said.
"The Legacy (Parkway) will help, commuter rail will help, and if you get light rail into the communities ... we will really have a system that is really making people move out of their cars, onto mass transit and into the city."
UTA said it anticipates adding bus service to the county as it grows in population.
"Right now, it's a little sparse, but it will begin to look more like Salt Lake City, and the bus system will become more important," said Crandall. "It will be interesting to see."
