Utah averts disaster on the game's first play when the Utes recover a fumble after a 53-yard pass play by New Mexico. Rodney Ferguson coughs the ball up after being hit by safety Robert Johnson. Defensive lineman Gabe Long pounces on it at the Utah 27-yard line.

KEY CALL

The Utes dig into their bag of tricks for a touchdown late in the second quarter to make it 14-0. After taking the snap, quarterback Brian Johnson turns left and flips the ball to Jereme Brooks. He runs toward the right sideline and hits Bradon Godfrey on a 7-yard scoring strike.
