Sharing is caring for the Bulldogs

You have to scroll down quite a ways when glancing at the leading high school rushers in the state to find a Judge Memorial player.

To save you some time, go clear down — no, keep going — OK, stop at No. 61.

This must mean the Bulldogs have a lousy rushing attack or that they're pass happy or that they simply can't move the ball at all, and they certainly must never score, right?

Wrong, very wrong, on all accounts.

One of the big reasons Judge (10-2) is in the 3A championship game against Logan (11-2) — 6 p.m. Friday at Rice-Eccles Stadium — is because the Bulldogs don't have just one stat hog that opponents can key in on.

Quite the opposite. The Bulldogs' option attack works so well — they lead 3A in scoring with 36.4 points a game — because they spread the ball around to a bunch of different guys. Those jumping on the Judge bandwagon might notice a bumper sticker that reads "Sharing is caring" on the rear.

"It's a versatile offense," said Judge coach James Cordova. "It creates team unity because everybody gets a turn."

The Bulldogs' semifinal win over Union was a prime example of how giving different players opportunities can lead to success. As a team, Judge rushed for 420 yards and six touchdowns, with eight different players getting touches.

Having multiple weapons paid off. The Cougars keyed on Lewis Walker at first, so Judge countered by handing the ball off to Bruce Garlinghouse. He responded with three touchdowns and 99 of his 126 yards rushing in the first half.

That gave Walker a bit more space, and he finished with 127 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Tyson Moll, another wingback threat, added 63 yards rushing and a TD.

"If it's clicking, just like any offense, it's tough to defend," Cordova said. "It's a pick-up thing. Everybody's gotta pick each other up."

The coach points to depth and camaraderie as being a couple of Judge's strengths.

Though the Bulldogs don't have someone challenging for a rushing title, their stats show how diverse their offense can be. Walker (722 yards) and Moll (711 yards) have churned out the most yardage while combining for 23 touchdowns.
