Blowout loss, slew of penalties irk Utah State football coach

LOGAN — If getting waxed by No. 19 Boise State 52-0 Saturday wasn't bad enough, the play of his team at the end of the game was reason for consternation for Utah State football coach Brent Guy. And he's made it very clear that he's not going to stand for it.

Utah State was flagged nine times for 77 yards, and four personal foul penalties were called on the Aggies in the final 10 minutes of the game.

"We're not going to allow that to happen, and any player that gets a personal foul won't play. It's that simple," Guy said Monday. "We're not going to be that type of football team."

The first came after Utah State was intercepted, and with the penalty the Broncos started the drive at the USU 6. Three plays later Boise State scored.

On the kickoff, the Aggies were called for another personal foul and were pinned back on their own 9 to start the drive.

After Utah State was intercepted again, back-to-back penalties were called on the Aggies, and the Broncos started the drive on the USU 7. The defense made the second of two fourth-down, goal-line stands.

"I've very embarrassed about the personal fouls at the end and I told the guys the last thing we are going to do is go out there and play with guys doing that kind of stuff," he said following USU's first shutout in a year.

Two of the foul penalties didn't hurt pointswise, but they may equate to a loss of playing time for the guys who lost their composure.

"These last two games we're going to play with guys who are going to do what they are told," Guy said. " ... We're going to play hard. We're going to do what's called. We're going to play hard and clean, and we're not going to have personal fouls at the end of the game that embarrass Utah State like we did."

The Aggies travel to New Mexico State Saturday for the first of two consecutive road games to end the year.

BAD COMBINATION: Boise State scored on its first possession of the game, marking the fifth straight time and seventh of the year, that the Aggies have given up points on the opening drive.

For the third game in a row and sixth time this season, the Aggies failed to score points in the first quarter. The Aggies were also shut out in the second quarter for the first time this year.

AGGIE DEBUT: Third-string quarterback Sean Setzer made his first career appearance with the Aggies in the loss to the Broncos. Setzer completed one pass for 2 yards as the Aggies went three and out.
