PLAYER TO WATCH

JOHN FLETCHER, defensive tackle: The sophomore leads the Mountain West Conference and ranks 13th in the nation with eight sacks. He's one of 12 Cowboys to record sacks this season.

KEY MATCHUP

UTAH'S RUN GAME vs.WYOMING'S RUN DEFENSE: The Utes racked up 322 yards on the ground in their last outing. The Cowboys, however, defend the run extremely well, giving up just 100.9 yards per game.

THE STAKES

For Wyoming ... Bowl eligibility. The Cowboys are just one win away. After letting last week's game at San Diego State slip away, there's a sense of urgency.

For Utah ... The Utes have won five consecutive games and can lock up a winning season with a victory. The latter would almost certainly secure the program a bowl bid. Utah is also looking to avenge last year's 31-15 loss in Laramie.

THE TRENDS

For Wyoming ... The Cowboys have lacked consistency. They've lost three of four after opening the season 4-1. All three of the setbacks came in conference play — at home against New Mexico and on the road against Air Force and SDSU.

For Utah ... Numbers tell the story. The Utes are 6-0 when Darrell Mack rushes for 100 or more yards. They're 5-0 when QB Brian Johnson starts and finishes a game. Utah hasn't lost at home to Wyoming since a 43-29 setback in 1999.

THE EDGE

Wyoming will win if ... the Cowboys can keep Mack from gaining 100 yards — or so the stats indicate. Wyoming's run defense is No. 18 in the nation.
