The chairman of the Utah school board will give up the gavel at the end of the year.

Spokesman Mark Peterson says Kim Burningham will remain on the school board through 2010. He just doesn't want to be chairman.

The reasons include the long, tough campaign against vouchers, public aid for private school tuition. The 71-year-old Burningham was a leading opponent of vouchers, which were defeated Tuesday.

He has been chairman of the state school board for seven years.
