Y. women beat E. Oregon hoopsters
Cougars lead by as much as 20; all 17 players see action
Mallary Gillespie-Carling had a game-high 10 points and also had two assists, two steals and three rebounds. Teammate Lauren Riley-Varley grabbed 10 rebounds.
BYU led by as many as 20 points in a game where all 17 players on the Cougar roster saw action.
The regular season begins on Friday at UC Santa Barbara. BYU will also play at Arkansas State before returning for its home opener against Fresno State on Nov. 17.
SWIMMING & DIVING: The BYU men's team won against three of the four teams it took on at the Lincoln Shootout last week in Irvine, Calif. The Cougars' record after the two days sat at 7-1 at the completion of the event.
BYU beat UC Irvine (79-34), Cal State Northridge (102-9) and Cal Poly (94-19), but lost to Hawaii (55-58).
For her efforts at the recent Phill Hansel Duals in Houston, Texas, Cougar freshman Rachel Grant was named the Mountain West Conference Swimmer of the Week. Grant, from Walnut, Calif., won the 200 and 400 individual medleys and swept the butterfly events (100 fly and 200 fly).
The men and women will be in action at home on Friday at 6 p.m. against UNLV for the Mountain West Conference dual meet.
MEN'S TENNIS: BYU doubles partners Cassidy Mears and Jonathan Sanchez advanced to but lost in the finals at the So Cal Intercollegiate Championships in Los Angeles last Saturday.
The Cougars now prepare for their first regular-season match on Jan. 11 at home, against Utah State and Weber State.
WOMEN'S SOCCER: The Cougars (14-3-2 overall, 4-3 league) began play in the Mountain West Conference tournament this week at home, playing as the No. 3 seed.
They were set to take on the No. 6 TCU Horned Frogs (8-10, 3-4) Wednesday. The winner of that match is scheduled to face No. 2 seed San Diego State (9-7-3, 4-2-1) today in a semifinal match.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: BYU won both of its road matches last week, beating TCU, 30-27, 24-30, 31-29, 30-23, on Thursday, then swept New Mexico, 30-28, 30-26, 30-22, on Friday.
Junior middle blocker Rachel Dyer was recognized with Mountain West Conference player-of-the-week honors for her stellar play against the Horned Frogs and Lobos. Against TCU, Dyer had 13 kills, seven blocks, five digs and a .346 hitting percentage. Versus New Mexico, she had a team-high 12 kills on .625 hitting, and recorded eight blocks and a pair of assists.
LACROSSE: BYU came out victorious against all five opponents last weekend at the Best of the West Tournament in Las Vegas.
Over the span of the handful of games, the Cougars notched 58 goals, while the defense allowed just eight.
ICE HOCKEY: BYU beat up on the Rexburg Bulldogs, 17-2, in an exhibition game last Friday, then dropped an overtime thriller to Utah State in Logan on Saturday.
BYU next travels to Colorado for a pair of games this weekend. On Friday, they will take on Northern Colorado in Greeley, then face off against Metro State in Littleton on Saturday.
