3.9 quake registered in Sanpete County

EPHRAIM (AP) — A magnitude 3.9 earthquake occurred Monday in central Utah's Sanpete County, experts said.

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations described it as minor but said the earthquake was felt in Ephraim, Manti and Mount Pleasant, about 120 miles south of Salt Lake City.

The epicenter was three miles west-southwest of Ephraim. The quake occurred shortly before 3 p.m. MST and was felt at Snow College in Ephraim. No damage was reported.

"I'm on the third floor of our administration building, and we clearly felt it," said Rick Wheeler, vice president for college affairs. "Some students didn't feel it, but most did.

"It wasn't the rattling glass kind," he said. "It was more of a rolling rumble kind."

The epicenter was less than 30 miles from the Crandall Canyon mine, where a collapse inside the mountain registered 3.9 magnitude and killed six miners Aug. 6.

There is no mining activity in the area of the Ephraim earthquake, seismologist Relu Burlacu said.
