Last week, a bipartisan Latino coalition announced its support of vouchers. Today, another group says vouchers would harm Latino students.
Leaders of the Utah Council of La Raza and the Utah Hispanic Democratic Caucus say it would be better to focus on improving students' performance in public education, particularly when it comes to reducing class size.
The Salt Lake Branch of the NAACP also opposes the vouchers.
However, last week, former heads of Utah's Hispanic Republican and Democratic caucuses said that vouchers would make the option of private school more affordable for low-income Latino students. They said the vouchers would supplement public education, not take away from it.
