Colliers working with Procter & Gamble
In announcing its involvement in the process, Colliers said it worked closely with a large and diverse group of P&G representatives while leading the search that involved locations throughout the western United States. It said it kept P&G's involvement confidential by assuming the role of buyer to secure options on short-listed land parcels. Colliers said it will assign the purchase agreement on the chosen site to P&G now that the project and P&G's identity is public.
In a prepared statement, Gregg Wassmansdorf, vice president and manager of Colliers International's Location Advisory & Incentives Practice, the site selection process was one of the most comprehensive and sensitive for the firm to date.
"This project is not only large physically and financially, but encompassed the most challenging combination of site and infrastructure requirements of any project our practice has undertaken," he said. "In addition to finding a favorable location with a readily available and skilled work force, the project required a water delivery, wastewater, rail and utility infrastructure that allowed for significant future growth potential."
P&G announced Oct. 17 that Box Elder County, near Bear River City, will be the site of a $300 million paper-products manufacturing plant that will feature a paper machine, converting lines and warehouse space. Groundbreaking is expected in early 2008 with the new paper machine starting up in early 2010.
The plant is expected to have about 300 employees when it begins operation, with eventually as many as 1,000. The facility will be in a current "greenfield" site the first new greenfield site in the U.S. for the company in 30 years and be part of P&G's paper products division. Initially it will produce Bounty paper towels and Charmin toilet tissue.
Procter & Gamble Family Care has five manufacturing sites in the United States: Albany, Ga.; Cape Girardeau, Mo.; Green Bay, Wis.; Mehoopany, Pa.; and Oxnard, Calif. The Box Elder County plant will be the first new Family Care manufacturing facility in the United States since Oxnard began operation in 1973, the company said. The five existing paper-products locations were considered for expansion, and Utah was a finalist for the greenfield option along with Port of Murrow, Ore., and Walla Walla, Wash.
