PAYSON A new juried art exhibition by high school students is on display at the Peteetneet Academy through Thursday, Nov. 29.
Adjunct Utah Valley State College art instructor Donna Corno, also a member of the Peteetneet Art Council, put the show together by inviting art teachers from Payson, Spanish Fork and Springville high schools to participate. Springville High bowed out, but students at Brenda Burdick's Payson High School art class and the art classes of Shanoa Gardiner and Kathryn Robert, both of Spanish Fork High School, entered.
The student works are in pastels, watercolor, ink, acrylic, oil, graphite, colored pencil and photography. Artist Sue Parkinson juried the show. Students entered 55 pieces with 31 hung for the show.
First place went to Haley Richardson of Spanish Fork High, second to Hannah Pullon and third to Renae Phelps, both of Payson High School.
Richardson's oil painting of a used art brush and crumpled art paint tube is a metaphor for service, she said. Pullon created her pastel work of singer Bob Dylan from the cover of one of his album covers, capturing Dylan's wistful expression.
Phelps entered a colored pencil drawing of a kitten's face in browns and tans with green eyes.
"It's very realistic," Corno said.
Honorable mentions went to Dani Coutlee and Kari Ann Haskell of Payson High and Chase Jermain and David Raleigh of Spanish Fork High. Raleigh received two.
