Hooper is incorrectly called "Who-per" by those unfamiliar with the name of the town.

The pronunciation isn't hard. It's just like the word "hooker" — but with a "p" instead of a "k."

The correct pronunciation is based on the town's namesake, Capt. William H. Hooper, Utah's first delegate to Congress, and how he said his name.

A highlight in Hooper history was on Sept. 10, 1982, when President Ronald Reagan spoke at the Hooper Park.

Hooper is also known for its quality tomatoes, and Hooper Tomato Days has been celebrated annually on Labor Day since 1932.

The town is also a gateway to two significant waterfowl areas — Ogden Bay and Howard Slough.

Hooper includes Fremont Island in its official borders too, making the town the only municipality in Utah to have its own island.

Fremont Island is located about six miles west of Hooper, in the Great Salt Lake. The 2,943-acre island is about 6 miles long and 2 miles wide.
