Parole denied for man who shot at trooper

UTAH STATE PRISON — A man who opened fire on a Utah Highway Patrol trooper and his family outside a Cedar City auto parts store will not be released from prison.

In a brief decision released Wednesday, the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole scheduled another parole hearing for David Lynn Williams for June 2008.

Williams, 54, pleaded guilty but mentally ill to the 2002 shooting. Neither the trooper nor his family were hurt in the shooting.

Williams fled the scene and was shot by police as he stepped out of his car on I-15, holding a gun.
