Campaign coffers swell for Cannon, his election rivals
Cannon, R-Utah, who has served six terms, is the only one of Utah's three House members to have declared opponents for the 2008 election, but all three congressmen are raising money to keep their seats.
Cannon raised $53,087 for the third quarter, July 1 to Sept. 30, bringing his fund-raising total to $284,122 this cycle, according to the FEC. He has $40,026 cash on hand.
His campaign spokesman, Nate Rathbun, said Cannon is ahead of where he was at this stage of the election two years ago and has already raised $70,000 more than he had in the third quarter of 2005.
"Our focus is to raise the money necessary to run an effective campaign," Rathbun said.
The challengers' numbers do not "sway" Cannon's campaign one way or another, Rathbun said, and Cannon does not plan to alter his fund-raising strategy.
Leavitt is a younger brother of former Utah governor and current Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt. David Leavitt, who declared his candidacy for the congressional seat this past spring, raised $110,005 between April 26 and Sept. 30, according to the FEC. He has $95,194 cash on hand.
This includes a $10,800 contribution from David Leavitt himself, $8,500 of which is an in-kind contribution to use space in a building he owns. Leavitt, a former Juab County prosecutor, said he made the donation as a symbolic effort to donate to the same limit that those who support him can.
Chaffetz, a former campaign manager and chief of staff to Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr., said the campaign was "right on track" with where he wanted to be.
"This is a campaign about who can do more with less," Chaffetz said, adding that he has no paid staff.
Once a candidate reaches $5,000 in contributions or expenditures, he or she must report to the FEC.
Chaffetz declared his candidacy this month. He has raised $45,100 for his campaign, according to the FEC report filed Monday, which for him covered Jan. 15 through Sept. 30. He has $35,346 cash on hand.
Meanwhile, Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah, raised about $192,755 this past quarter, and he has $752,626 cash on hand. So far for the 2008 race, he has raised $577,772.
The FEC report for Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah, was not available Monday, but his chief of staff, Scott Parker, said Bishop raised about $55,000 this quarter and has about $125,000 cash on hand.
Sen. Bob Bennett, R-Utah, who is not up for re-election until 2010, raised $56,000 between July and September. He has $209,964 cash on hand.
Sen. Orrin Hatch, who was re-elected to another six-year term in 2006, raised $41,733 between July and September, putting his fund raising at $108,820 to date for this cycle. His cash on hand is at $1.9 million.
