The Utah Transit Authority was one of two transit agencies honored recently for its efforts to become certified for environmental and management standards by the International Organization for Standardization.

UTA has said it is one of the first transit agencies in the world to become ISO certified. It was awarded by the American Public Transportation Association for its "innovation" in receiving the certification. The ISO is a network of national standards institutes of 156 countries.

In addition to UTA, Lane Beattie, president of the Salt Lake Chamber, was awarded by APTA with the "Local Distinguished Service Award." The award was given for his efforts to get voters last November to approve a tax increase for transit, APTA said in a statement.

APTA is a nonprofit international association with 1,500 members. Membership is made of groups such as transit agencies, planning and design firms.
