BYU

TENNIS: Cougars Jonathan Sanchez and Cassidy Mears came away with one final win on Saturday to clinch the doubles title at the University of Utah Invitational.

As the lone BYU players remaining in the tournament, Mears and Sanchez won a hard-fought 8-6 final match against Weber State foes Sascha Kiehne and Fabio Mancarella.

Sanchez and Mears are the only returning players from last season; Sanchez is the only senior on this year's team.

Up next the team will travel to Las Vegas to compete in the ITA Region VII Championships on Oct. 17-20.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING: The BYU women's swim team downed New Mexico 185-56 at the Ute Natatorium on Saturday.

BYU swept every swimming and diving event. The Cougars had a strong showing from a group of four talented freshmen — Michelle Menezes, Rachel Grant, Aleesha Miller and Sara Jayne Christiansen. Menezes placed second in the 1000 and 500 freestyle, losing to her sophomore sister Natasha both times. Grant won the 400 IM, Miller took first in the 50 and 100 free, and Christiansen won the 100 backstroke.

Utah State

SOCCER: Utah State returns home today to host Boise State at noon at Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field. The Aggies take a 5-8 record and 1-0 conference mark into the match, after defeating Idaho, 4-0, Friday evening in the WAC conference opener.

The Broncos are 5-5-2 overall and 1-0 in the WAC, after defeating Louisiana Tech, 4-2, Friday in their conference opener.

UVSC

VOLLEYBALL: Kayli Broadbent and Camie Manwill both tallied career-high numbers as Utah Valley won its second match in as many days over Cal State-Bakersfield. Broadbent had 26 kills and Manwill had 27 digs as the Wolverines outlasted the Roadrunners in five games (30-24, 28-30, 29-31, 30-24, 15-12) — their ninth win in the past 10 matches.

Southern Utah

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Southern Utah beat Embry-Riddle 1-0, but it was the team's effort to raise awareness for breast cancer that was even a larger win on Saturday.

The Thunderbirds improved to 3-4-5 with the win and raised more than $2,000 towards breast cancer research in the process.
