3 debates on vouchers planned

Oct. 10:

Leah Barker, representative for pro-voucher Parents for Choice in Education, will debate a representative from anti-voucher Utahns for Public Schools. Frank Guliuzza, chairman of Weber State University's political science department, will moderate. The debate will be held at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic High School Auditorium, 1790 Lake St., Ogden. Call 801-920-3621.

Oct. 16:

Anti-voucher Utahns for Public Schools leader Kim Burningham, who is also the chairman of the Utah Board of Education, will square off with Doug Holmes, chairman of the pro-voucher Parents for Choice in Education. The debate will be moderated by former Utah state senator Patrice Arent and held at noon at the Marriott Hotel, 75 S. West Temple.

Oct. 23:

The Federalist Society at the University of Utah's S.J. Quinney College of Law will sponsor a voucher debate at the law school.

Patrick Byrne, chairman and chief executive officer of Overstock.com, and voucher bill sponsor, Rep. Greg Hughes, debate in favor of vouchers, while Vik Arnold, the Utah Education Association's director of government relations and political action, and Allen Smith, attorney for Utahns for Public Schools, will represent the anti-voucher position.

The event will be at 7 p.m. in the Sutherland Moot Courtroom, 332 S. 1400 East. Parking will be available at the U. stadium. Contact munsonm@law.utah.edu.
