Rookie goaltender continues to learn
The fourth overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft back in January got the start in goal Saturday night in Real Salt Lake's 3-2 loss to Chivas USA. Playing behind starter Nick Rimando most of the year, it was his first action since May 5, a game in which started and surrendered three goals in a tie with the New York Red Bulls.
Seitz was disappointed with both the result and to have gone this long in the season without picking up his first MLS victory, but he said it has been a great growing experience.
"I have learned a lot honestly," said Seitz. "When you have a keeper like Nick with you, it's a lot of learning. He's a great goalkeeper, been great in this league and having an unbelievable year. I have just been trying to pick up from him and trying to learn from him."
While surrendering three goals is never what a goalkeeper would like, it may not have been because of the rookie's play.
"I think he did well," said Kreis. "His judgment, his reading of the game in the first half I thought was particularly good. He was out in good time and in good fashion on quite a few plays that got in behind our defense."
Brown's goal in the 52nd minute gave him five on the season and sole possession of the team lead at least for 11 minutes. But that is not something on which he concentrates.
"It is not something I really think about," said Brown. "I figure if I just go out and do my job and work hard, be dangerous, then the goals will take care of themselves. To be honest, I was more just disappointed that we didn't get the three points tonight."
Findley rejoined Brown at the top of Real's offense when he got his fifth goal in the 63rd minute. He got on the end of a great cross from Andy Williams. The team has netted only 30 goals total on the season, so that the team lead is at five is just fine with Kreis.
"I wouldn't say that there is anyone in particular that we are looking to carry the brunt of the scoring. I prefer it that way," Kreis said. "I prefer that the goals get strung out amongst the players. We've got mulitple players out there that can strike. That way defenses are looking this way and that to figure out who they are going to mark and key on."
