Deputies seek culprit in shooting of horse

IVINS, Washington County — Sheriff's deputies are looking for whoever opened fire on a horse in its corral, shooting it as many as 50 times.

The horse was found dead by its owner at its corral in the Anasazi Valley near Ivins, deputies said. The owner came out to feed the horse on Sunday and made the gruesome discovery.

"It's malicious," Washington County Sheriff's Lt. Jake Adams said Wednesday.

Deputies believe the horse was shot 30 to 50 times with a small caliber handgun.

"We collected some evidence there at the scene, but we don't have any suspects at this time," Adams said.

Because of the isolated area, deputies are asking if anyone saw vehicles or people in the area on Sept. 29 or 30 to report what they saw. Anyone with information is asked to call the Washington County Sheriff's Office at 435-656-6500.
