Sloan and senior vice president of basketball operations Kevin O'Connor said Monday they don't know if Boozer's absence will end soon or if he'll miss some preseason games, which start Oct. 10 against Milwaukee at EnergySolutions Arena.

LYDE LIGHT: Camp invitee Kevin Lyde is also noticeably slimmer than he was in the Rocky Mountain Revue in July, though he doesn't know how much he's lost.

"I'm not sure. I haven't been on a scale," said the 6-foot-9 rookie who weighed 340 pounds a year ago and spent four seasons in the minor leagues. When asked about whether the Jazz had weighed him prior to camp, Lyde said, "They did, but I didn't want to see it."

C.J. SIGNED: Restricted free-agent guard C.J. Miles on Monday morning signed the same contract offer that's been on the table since late June. It's a fully guaranteed one-year deal for some $945,000, more than a 40 percent raise from his two-year rookie deal that expired after last season. Miles had hoped to get a multi-year contract.

"Everything's a learning process for me, so I guess it was worth it, because if I ever come to that situation again, I'll know other ways how to handle things and what it's like," said the 20-year-old of his anxious summer of waiting.

NO PHOTOS, PLEASE: Deron Williams asked that no photos be taken of him with a swollen right cheek, the result of having his wisdom teeth removed last Friday. He said he wasn't sure if he'd be able to take part in today's first practice at Boise State's Taco Bell Arena because of the medication he was still taking.

KNEE'S OK: Matt Harpring said his right knee is "OK" after surgery Aug. 1 to clean out scar tissue.

"I've just got to keep going and get the strength back in the quad," he said. "That's the big thing, and then we'll move on from there."

Harpring will handle training camp "by ear," he said. "I'm sure I won't go full-tilt right away."

He expects to be good for the start of the regular season: "I'm hoping, yeah. Planning on it."
