Art by Jeffrey Hein. Works by Hein and Douglas Fryer will be on display at Springville Museum of Art.

SPRINGVILLE — The Springville Museum of Art is currently featuring the works of Jeffrey Hein and Douglas Fryer and their views of Sevier County.

Landscape artist and Utah native Fryer was born in Salt Lake City and raised in Illinois and California. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in illustration from Brigham Young University in 1988 and Master of Fine Arts in painting and drawing from BYU in 1995. Fryer has taught fine art and illustration at several universities and art schools, including BYU, the University of Hartford in Connecticut, and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. He works mainly in oil but enjoys using a variety of mediums, including watercolor, printmaking and digital. Fryer's love of landscapes has its roots in the many beautiful areas of the country in which he has lived, including rural Vermont and, most recently, central Utah.

This year Fryer entered two works in the Springville Museum of Art's Spring Salon 2007, which both won Juror's First Place Awards. His works are simple yet touching.

The figurative works of Hein are also featured in the current exhibitions.

Hein was born in New Windsor, N.Y. Though his love of art and determination to become an artist began at the young age of 7, Hein chose not to study art until his first year of college. In 1992 Hein took his first drawing class at Ricks College, Idaho. A couple years later, Hein was diagnosed with cancer and set out on a year and a half of treatment and recovery. He believes his life experiences have influenced his work and helped him to reach his goals as an artist. He later returned to school at the University of Utah, receiving a Master of Fine Arts in painting and drawing in 2002. Hein's work has been shown in a number of national shows and has been written up in a variety of newspapers and national magazines, including Arts and Antiques, American Art Collector and Southwest Art. Hein was chosen as a special guest artist at the Spring Salon 2007, where his work, "Twelve Shades," was featured on the cover of the catalog.

"The Art of Sevier County, Utah" represents a wide variety of subject matter and styles — figurative drawings, the landscapes of central Utah depicted through watercolor, pastel and oil, photography and genre scenes of contemporary life.
