Left & right jabs — Vouching for education

Published: Tuesday, Oct. 2 2007 12:05 a.m. MDT

This is a quote from the Utah Republican platform: "We believe that all children should have access to quality education. Parents have the primary right and responsibility to educate their children, and we support their right to choose public, private or home education. We support incentives to promote competitive excellence."

Why hasn't the Utah Republican Party taken a stand in favor of vouchers?

At last, someone — Rep. Sheryl Allen — has nailed the real reason for the defeat of school vouchers. It would fund another school system, private schools. Vouchers would drain funds from public schools. No double-talk will change that fact.

I was disgusted to find out that the junior high I attended — Bennion — was turned into the "last-chance school." That's nice. If I had a child at Bennion, I would be first in line to vote "yes" for school vouchers.

Please. Give us a debate on the issue, not an expose of the NEA. I want sound, rational and legitimate reasons why I should vote for vouchers, just as I would appreciate the same for why I should vote against them.

I live in Cambridge, Mass., where we spend $23,000 per pupil per year — the highest in the state. Nonetheless, Cambridge consistently ranks in the bottom fifth of Massachusetts schools. Parents cannot reform our broken system unless we have a viable alternative. Without vouchers, overworked and financially strapped parents have no options.
