The Utah Department of Transportation has approved the installation of two soundwalls on the I-15 corridor — one in Layton and another in Kaysville.

The Hill Villa subdivision, in Layton — the city's oldest — was approved for a soundwall on the west side of the freeway, just south of the Layton Hills Mall interchange. Estimated cost on that project is $282,000.

Kaysville will also receive a soundwall on the east side of I-15, between Shepard and Burton lanes, at a cost of about $1 million. That wall will also span the truck stop section.

According to Andy Neff, UDOT spokesman for Region 1, the soundwalls are both on a fast track in the design phase now. They will both ideally be installed during next year's I-15 expansion project between Farmington and Layton. If not, soon thereafter.

He said residents were polled and they all wanted a simulated rock type of soundwall structure. It will vary in height from 12 to 16 feet.

Residents who live in both areas along the freeway had lobbied UDOT and their city leaders for the soundwalls.
