LEHI A balanced effort and Jon Hess' foot led the Lone Peak Knights to a shutout victory over Lehi 47-0 Friday night.
The Knights' new season is definitely underway as they open Region 4 with a 2-0 record after going 0-5 through a difficult preseason.
"I'm happy for our kids. They gave a really good effort and they deserve this. Everybody worked together tonight, and that's the key thing," said Lone Peak coach Monte Morgan, who is back after a one-week absence.
His players went out with an all-out attack, and it all started early off the vaunted Hess foot. His 54-yard field goal early in the first quarter really put some fire into the Knights, who scored 17 points in the first half.
Tannon Pedersen tossed a 43-yard pass to Travis Johnson after forcing the Pioneers to punt after just three downs. And then the fireworks started.
The first of seven total interceptions by the two teams, four by Lone Peak and three by Lehi, was snagged by Knight Quaide Chappuis, who then proceeded to take the ball 43 yards into the end zone for Lone Peak's second touchdown of the game.
Lehi had one shot to put some points on the board just before halftime, but the field-goal attempt was blocked by Ty Thomas. Only, he didn't exactly take the ball out of the air in the ordinary way. He preserved the shutout by blocking the ball with his facemask.
A one-yard touchdown run by Kyle Telaroli, a 32-yard touchdown run by Jordan Lowry, and a 46-yard field goal by Hess added another 17 points to the Knights' side of the scoreboard before the end of the third quarter.
"We have a lot of improvements to make, but I think we're on the right track. The kids played very hard tonight," said Morgan, who is looking forward to a matchup with Pleasant Grove next week.
Keith Hubert finished up the Knights' scoring with a two-yard run after an interception by Michael Wing gave them the ball with good field position.
Chappuis added another interception to his touchdown ball, and Colson Healy added one to his game-ending interception against Spanish Fork to lead the Knight's passing defense.
Josh Miller, Clint Ash and Jeremy Holland each recorded interceptions for the Pioneers, who are now 0-2 in league competition.
