As Utahns, we should be proud that Chief Justice Christine Durham has been selected to receive the National Center for State Court's William Rehnquist Award. The fact that the award will be presented by Chief Justice John Roberts of the United States Supreme Court shows what an important honor this is.
Justice Durham was the first woman and the youngest person ever to be appointed to the Utah district bench. She was the first woman and youngest person elected by her fellow judges as presiding judge of the 3rd District. She was the first woman appointed to the Utah Supreme Court, and she is the only woman to be elected chief justice by her fellow justices.
From her first appointment 27 years ago, she has been a dedicated public servant and leader. She is known nationally for her work in developing and promoting legally related education in schools.
This award recognizes that her influence has benefited not only Utah but the entire nation.
