The investigation into a tragic weekend accident in which a 4-year-old girl was run over by a vehicle and killed in the driveway of her Riverton home continued Monday.
The girl, Kyla Lambson, had just arrived home with a neighbor who had taken her to church, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Paul Jaroscak. The 37-year-old woman parked her SUV in the home's steep driveway, near 11800 South and 800 West, a little after 4 p.m. Sunday, and both got out of the vehicle.
They were walking to the home's front door when the girl's brother yelled at them from across the street to come look at something he found, Jaroscak said.
The neighbor and Lambson started walking down the driveway, behind the SUV, when the woman noticed her vehicle was rolling down the hill toward them.
"She tried to grab (Lambson) and pull her out of the way," Jaroscak said.
The SUV ran over the little girl, killing her.
Investigators were unsure Monday why the vehicle rolled backward. Part of the investigation included looking into whether the parking brake was set, Jaroscak said. Deputies hoped to answer some of those questions by conducting a forensic investigation on the vehicle.
Jaroscak said the tragedy has been extremely hard on everyone involved, including sheriff's deputies who first responded to the scene.
