Then, on his 21st birthday, Sam learns his parents sold his soul to the Devil before he was born. (There's an explanation — they're nice folks. Really.)

The Devil (Ray Wise in a bit of perfect casting) doesn't drag Sam down to hell, he puts him to work. Sam becomes the Devil's bounty hunter, assigned to capture really nasty souls who have escaped from the underworld. He's not exactly prepared for the job, but he does get help from his goofy friend, Bert "Sock" Wysocki (Tyler Labine) and — at least in the first episode — a Dirt Devil mini-vacuum. Really.

There are touches of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" here, along with a big dose of "Shawn of the Dead." Harrison is unendingly appealing in the lead role, and he's got great support.

This is the kind of show the kids watching The CW could really get behind. And some of their parents, too.
