Sandy police are looking for a dapper diamond bandit.

A man witnesses described as being "very well dressed and articulate," as well as poised, robbed a jewelry store inside South Towne Center on Wednesday afternoon.

And the man didn't take just any random jewelry. He specifically pointed out six high-value diamonds that he wanted, said Sandy police Sgt. Victor Quezada.

"He obviously had some knowledge of diamonds," he said. "He knew which ones were high quality."

The man went inside JC Keepsake, 10450 S. State, earlier that day, apparently to case the merchandise, and then returned right before closing, Quezada said.

The suspect, who witnesses described as a black man between 40 and 50 years old, 250 pounds and somewhere between 5-foot-11 and 6-foot-4, was wearing a dark blue suit with matching slacks, a yellow dress shirt and tie, a tan derby-style hat and oblong sunglasses with black frames.

The well-dressed robber told the employees he had a gun and demanded six specific diamonds worth an undisclosed amount of money, Quezada said. After getting what he wanted, the man "very calmly walked out," he said.

No information was available on a possible getaway vehicle.

Anyone with information on the dapper bandit is asked to call Sandy police at 840-4000.
