Women's volleyball hits 1,000-victory mark

PROVO — The Brigham Young women's volleyball team joined an elite club when they became just the fourth program in NCAA volleyball history to reach the 1,000-victory mark after their win at San Diego State last Saturday. The only other teams to reach the mark are UCLA, Nebraska and Missouri State.

The win against the Aztecs came in dramatic fashion. Down 2-0 in a best-of-five match, the Cougars rallied to win three straight and win, 24-30, 25-30, 30-26, 30-24, 15-7.

BYU is now 7-3 overall, 1-1 in the Mountain West Conference. The Cougars' all-time record is 1,000-277-5 during the program's 39-year history.

ICE HOCKEY: The Provo IceCats, a hockey team comprised of Brigham Young students that has been in existence since 1994, will finally be acknowledged as an official sport at BYU.

The Icecats, which begin their season Oct. 12, will now don the BYU logo on its uniforms and will be allowed full access to university facilities. The team will continue to be funded by donors and private individuals.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Two Cougars grabbed league honors last week when junior forward Katie Larkin and junior defender Jessica Harmon-Carter were named Mountain West Conference offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively.

Larkin scored game-winning goals in both of BYU's 1-0 games against Long Beach State and Wisconsin. She connected on a penalty kick against Long Beach State and put in a left-footed goal from 25 yard out against the Badgers.

Harmon-Carter anchored BYU's defense, helping to hold opponents to just three shots on goal during the two contests. Senior goalkeeper Erika Woodbury is the only Division I goalkeeper in the nation to not allow a single goal so far this season.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: The Cougars faced a severe weather challenge in Tucson, Ariz., in their second race of the season.

Battling 100-degree heat, BYU came out on top against competitors Arizona State, Paradise Valley Community College, Central Arizona and host Arizona in the Dave Murray Invitational last Friday.

Cougar Stephan Shay finished the 6,000-meter race first, while teammate Jacob Gustafsson came in third. Other BYU finishers were Chandler Goodwin in 10th and Brandon Hebbert in 11th.

BYU's next race is Sept. 28 at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind.

WOMEN'S GOLF: No. 16 BYU finished the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic tied for third place in the season-opening tournament played in Fort Collins, Colo. Twenty teams competed in the tourney.

Juli Erekson was the top Cougar finisher, shooting an even par 221 total to tied for ninth. Sara Romero was 20th, while teammate Natalia Jimenez tied for 21st.

BYU will play in The Preview on Sept. 24-26, in Albuquerque, N.M.
