RAFTING: Solitude Scenic Float Trips 10-mile trips offer opportunities to see wildlife and the Teton Range. 888-704-2800, www.solitudefloattrips.com.
FISHING: Anglers love Jackson Lake's ample cutthroat and Mackinaw lake trout. The 16-mile-long lake is popular for boating and other water sports.
BOATING: Leek's Marina, Signal Mountain Marina and Colter Bay Marina serve boaters on Jackson Lake. A shuttle boat gives a 20-minute ride across Jenny Lake to Cascade Canyon Trailhead.
HIKING: Trails in Granite Canyon, Death Canyon and Cascade Canyon test endurance skills. Easy trails include the network at Hermitage Point by Colter Bay and the loop trails at Leigh, String and Jenny lakes.
HORSEBACK RIDING: Trail rides depart from corrals at Colter Bay Village and Jackson Lake Lodge.
CLIMBING: The Tetons, often called the "cradle of North American mountaineering," offer challenging rock and ice climbing. Blacktail Butte in the middle of the valley is accessible via trails also used by wildlife.
WILDLIFE: Expect to see the large and small, from moose to pika. Bison, pronghorn, elk, moose, bear, bighorn sheep, beaver, river otter, bald eagle, hawk.
WINTER SPORTS: Cross-country skiers follow trails in four areas. Expert downhill skiers descend the Tetons on untracked powder runs.
HERITAGE: Indian Arts Museum at Colter Bay Visitors Center documents the rich culture of the valley's first inhabitants. American Indians came to hunt and gather plants. The Shoshone tribes called the mountains "Teewinot," or "Many Pinnacles." Historic structures are testaments of the hard life endured by early cattle ranchers and farmers. Menor's Ferry features historical displays and photographs. The Murie Ranch, owned for many years by environmentalists Olaus and Mardy Murie, was the birthplace for major conservation campaigns. It is a National Historic Landmark.
