NEW YORK (AP) Pierre Boulez will replace Claudio Abbado as conductor of Mahler's Third Symphony with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra on Oct. 6.
The 74-year-old Abbado, who had stomach cancer surgery seven years ago, was to have led the Lucerne Festival Orchestra in three season-opening performances at Carnegie on Oct. 3, 4 and 6 but canceled last week, citing health. A replacement has not yet been announced for the first two programs,
Abbado founded of the Lucerne orchestra, which will be making its North American debut. He previously was artistic director of the Berlin Philharmonic and music director at La Scala in his native Milan, Italy, and at the Vienna State Opera.
