PRUETT CLAIMS POLE: Scott Pruett won his first Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series pole of the season Friday in Tooele, topping qualifying for the season-ending SunChaser 1000 today at Miller Motorsports Park.

Pruett, driving the No. 01 Chip Ganassi Racing Lexus Riley, had a lap around the 4.486-mile road course at an average speed of 100.568 mph and withstood a last-lap challenge from championship rival Alex Gurney in the No. 99 Gainsco Pontiac Riley to win his first pole since the 2006 SunChaser 1000.

Gurney and co-driver Jon Fogarty have a one-point lead over Pruett in the Rolex Series Daytona Prototype championship. Max Angelelli, who starts eighth in the No. 10 SunTrust Pontiac Riley, is three points behind Gurney and Fogarty.

U.S. TOPS SWEDEN: Playing with a sore toe and 11 stitches in her head doesn't seem to bother Abby Wambach.

The top U.S. striker scored both goals Friday in a 2-0 victory over Sweden in the women's World Cup in Chengdu, China. She now has three in two games, and the win puts the No. 1-ranked Americans in good position to make the quarterfinals.

Wambach converted a penalty in the 34th and scored a textbook goal in the 58th, settling a long ball on her chest from Kristine Lilly and then driving a 15-yard, left-footed shot past Sweden keeper Hedvig Lindahl.

NELSON RETURNING? The Golden State Warriors are close to reaching a deal to rework coach Don Nelson's contract and bring him back for another season with the team.

"I am hopeful that we can finalize something by the close of the business week," team president Robert Rowell said Friday.

Nelson, who had two years left on the contract he signed last year, would get a raise from $3.1 million to $5.1 million a year under the new deal, according to the Contra Costa Times.

In exchange, the third year of the deal would convert to a team option, the paper said.

If the option was not exercised, Nelson would $1 million under a five-year consulting deal with the team.
