The winners and the losers

Loser: The annals of criminal stupidity appear to be always open to new entries. Take the man in Englewood, Colo., recently who decided to rob a bank by writing a note to a teller. He wrote this on the back of one of his own checks, after a clumsy effort to cover his name with a pen. What, the back side of his Social Security card or his birth certificate weren't handy?

Winner: Everyone loves a good ending, and none could be as good, or as happy, as one surrounding a search in the Uinta Mountains this week for 3-year-old Benjamin Myrup. He was found safe, other than a few scratches, after spending nearly a day lost in the wilderness. Credit goes to numerous volunteers, more than 100 by some estimates, who helped. Some of them simply dropped their day jobs and joined in.

Loser: Arson is among the most deadly and hard-to-understand crimes. The deliberately set fires that destroyed two homes in Salt Lake City's Avenues neighborhood this week, injuring an elderly couple, are prime examples. Police took three teenagers into custody. If they are guilty, they soon will learn that such a "prank" can carry enormous consequences.
