A bad summer for movies

Among the turkeys on the list of the 10 worst films of summer was the dreadful 'License to Wed' starring Mandy Moore, Robin Williams and John Krasinski.

This may be the longest August in history. Cinematically, at least.

Typically, movie studios use the month as a "dumping ground" for their least-promising summer films. (They do the same in January, which is heavy on "leftovers" from the previous movie year.)

Last month brought us the worst of the summer "three-quels," "Rush Hour 3"; Rob Zombie's boring "Halloween" remake; and the alleged comedies "Balls of Fury," "Daddy Day Camp" and "Mr. Bean's Holiday."

And September has continued that onslaught. Aside from "3:10 to Yuma" and "Shoot 'Em Up," there hasn't been much to celebrate.

"Mr. Woodcock" went through multiple re-shoots and directors (only Craig Gillespie is credited, though supposedly David Dobkin was brought in to salvage it).

And two locally produced movies, "Moving McAllister" and "Return With Honor: A Missionary Homecoming," are so awful that they should have gone directly to video.

I wish I could say that things were looking up, but the next couple of weeks will see the release of "Resident Evil: Apocalypse," the Dane Cook-Jessica Alba vehicle "Good Luck Chuck," another Amanda Bynes comedy, "Sydney White," and "The Game Plan," which also looks dreadful.

NEED A BAD MOVIE REMINDER? The Washington Post and the Rotten Tomatoes Web site (www.rottentomatoes.com) have put together a list of the 10 worst films of the summer.

Rotten Tomatoes compiles movie reviews from newspapers, magazines, Web sites and other media outlets around the country. According to the site's researchers, the worst-reviewed films this summer were:

1. "License to Wed"

2. "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry"

3. "Daddy Day Camp"

4. "Captivity"

5. "Rush Hour 3"

6. "I Know Who Killed Me"

7. "Bratz: The Movie"

8. "The Invasion"

9. "Georgia Rule"

10. "Evan Almighty"
