NEW FILMS FRIDAY

THE BRAVE ONE — **Despite Jodie Foster's strong performance, this vigilante thriller is ludicrous and wrong-headed. Running time: 119 minutes, R (violence, profanity, gore, vulgarity, sex, drugs, brief nudity, slurs)

THE DEVIL CAME ON HORSEBACK — *** 1/2A provocative documentary examining the continuing extermination of black Africans in Darfur. With subtitles, running time: 85 minutes, not rated, probable PG-13 (violence, gore, slurs)

DRAGON WARS (D-WAR) — Fire-breathing reptiles lay siege to Los Angeles in this fantasy-thriller starring Jason Behr. To be reviewed next week, running time: 90 minutes, PG-13 (violence)

MOVING MCALLISTER — *A locally produced comedy that features sexual and drug humor. And absolutely nothing that is funny. Running time: 90 minutes, PG-13 (vulgarity, violence, drugs, brief sex)

MR. WOODCOCK — * 1/2A painfully unfunny, mean-spirited comedy that feels like a series of mismatched parts. Seann William Scott stars. Running time: 87 minutes, PG-13 (vulgarity, violence, profanity, sex, slurs, brief drugs)

RETURN WITH HONOR: A MISSIONARY HOMECOMING — * 1/2An earnest but misguided fantasy-drama that takes itself too seriously, turning into an unintentional comedy. Running time: 103 minutes, PG (violence, vulgarity, mild profanity)

THEM — ** 1/2The ending is rather unsatisfying, but this French import does generate some real suspense for at least an hour. French with subtitles, running time: 75 minutes, R (violence, brief gore, profanity, brief sex)

THE TEN — **Only three segments in this irreverent Ten Commandments comedy are sort of funny. Running time: 96 minutes, R (vulgarity, profanity, sex, violence, drugs, rape, nudity, slurs, brief gore)

THIS IS ENGLAND — ***Filmmaker Shane Meadows' fictionalized version of his time spent in a skinhead gang is vivid — and at times is hard to watch. Running time: 102 minutes, not rated, probable R (profanity, violence, drugs, vulgarity, slurs, brief gore, brief sex, brief nudity)

SNEAK PREVIEW

THE KINGDOM — Jamie Foxx leads his fellow FBI agents into the Middle East in Peter Berg's action-thriller. To be reviewed when it opens Sept. 28, running time: 110 minutes, R (violence, profanity, gore, torture, vulgarity, slurs) (Saturday: Gateway, Jordan Commons, Jordan Landing)
