Walt Disney Co., the second-largest U.S. media company, plans to test 65,000 toys featuring its characters after Mattel Inc. recalled Chinese-made Barbie and Fisher-Price products that may contain excessive levels of lead.
Disney representatives will buy and assess products from retailers this week and next to ensure the merchandise meets safety standards, said Gary Foster, a Disney spokesman.
China produces about 80 percent of the toys offered by Disney, based in Burbank, Calif. The tests will involve about 2,000 Disney licensees worldwide, Foster said. Mattel, the world's largest toymaker, announced its third toy recall in five weeks on Sept. 4. About two-thirds of its toys are made in China.
