Salt Lake City police were able to arrest a heavily armed man without any shots being fired early Monday.

The 31-year-old man had assaulted his wife at their house near 2300 South and 700 East, and she responded by calling 911, said Salt Lake City police detective Jared Wihongi.

The husband went to the basement to get an assault rifle, several stoked magazines and a handgun, Wihongi said. He then sat on the front porch of his house to wait for officers to arrive. He told his wife to call his son to say "goodbye," Wihongi said.

After police got to the house, an officer was able to sneak within a few feet of the man. He held him at gunpoint while asking, "How are you doing?" Wihongi said.

The man replied, "We will see," he said. The man then decided to comply with the officer's orders and was taken into custody without further incident.

Investigators later learned all the weapons were loaded and ready to be fired, Wihongi said.
